Research institutions are a subset of doctoral degree-granting institutions and conduct research. These universities meet the minimum requirement of at least or only rewarding twenty research-based Doctorate degrees.

There are 115 institutions that are classified as "R1: Research Universities (Highest research activity)" in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.
These universities have a very high level of both research activity and per capita in such research activity, using aggregate data to determine both measurements. These two classifications can be seen as the aggregate supply and aggregate demand of research, respectively.
Universities classified as "R2: Doctoral Universities â" Higher Research Activity"
There are 107 institutions that are classified as "R2: Research Universities (higher research activity)" in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.
These universities have a very high level of either research activity or per capita in such research activity, using aggregate data to determine both measurements, while having a very low level on the other qualification. These two classifications can be seen as the aggregate supply and aggregate demand of research, respectively.
Universities classified as "R3: Doctoral Universities â" Moderate Research Activity"
There are 112 institutions classified as "Doctoral Universities â" Moderate Research Activity" in the Carnegie Classification, as of the February 1, 2016 update.
These universities, although primarily focusing on research, have very low levels of research activity and per capita in such research activity, using aggregate data to determine both measurements. These two classifications can be seen as the aggregate supply and aggregate demand of research, respectively. In addition, these institutions may have little to no data from the National Science Foundation to determine how much research these institutions do.
